The Super Eagles of Nigeria go into second leg of the World Cup playoff in Calabar with 2-1 victory over Ethiopia in the first leg at Addis Ababa.
Fernabache striker Emmanuel Emenike won the game for Nigeria with second half goal. A fierce strike from outside the box and a penalty from Emmanuel Emenike sealed the Victory for Nigeria in Adis Ababa.
Though the game did not go well with Ethiopians after Saladin Said having an effort he believed had crossed the line cleared by Geoffrey Oboabona.
Super Eagles will be without Real Betis midfielder Nosa Igiebor and Uche Nwofor, from Dutch club Heerenveen, who have dropped out of the squad because of injury and was later replaced with Toronto FC Bright Dike.
Walya Antelope of Ethiopia on the other hand earlier this year, qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in over three decades and they are one game, one result away from qualifying for their first-ever FIFA World Cup.
Though they lost the first leg, they have since been boosted by the return of South Africa-based Bidvest Wits striker Getaneh Kebede, Kebede scored four goals in the qualifiers but missed the first leg in Adiss Ababa due to ankle injury.
“The return of Getaneh is really great news. I’ve seen him in training. He’s fit and will definitely have a role in the battle,” said Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw.
Past meetings
Both sides have met ten times with Nigeria claiming eight victories. Ethiopia recorded a famous win against the Super Eagles in a 1994 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with one other fixture ended in 2-2 draw during Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game in June 2012,at Addis Ababa.
