The Air Up There: A Look Into Ethiopia’s Distance Running Legacy

Most Ethiopians tried to avoid running on the roads, with the exception of Saturdays, when hundreds of runners would gather on a straight stretch of road outside Addis to do tempo runs between 10 and 35K
Coffee and long distance runners are two of Ethiopia’s most valuable exports, and when one steps outside at five thirty in the morning it is to the sight of women preparing coffee on charcoal stoves and weary runners sleepily making their way toward the forest. Most of my days in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city, started this way: with a five-minute walk to wake up and a run of at least an hour. Ethiopians, who alongside their East African rivals from Kenya account for a high percentage of the top long-distance runners in the world, do a lot of their running at quite an easy pace, weaving in and out of Eucalyptus trees in the forests to shouts of encouragement from people walking to work. ‘Iso ambessa’ was my favorite of these phrases, – meaning ‘keep going, lion’. Unlike in my native Britain, the shouts that runners receive in Ethiopia are exclusively positive. During my time in Ethiopia I lived at the Running Across Borders training camp, and did most of my running with a young runner called Gudisa. We were frequently joined on these morning runs by other athletes, who would run along behind us for a while before disappearing into the trees.

Ethiopian Yelekal Alemu, body found east of Lawrence; no foul play suspected

The body of 23-year-old Lawrence man Yelekal Alemu, known as Kal, was discovered east of Lawrence on May 31, 2012. Alemu, a former Kansas University student, was reported missing about three weeks earlier. No foul play is suspected in his death.
Douglas County authorities Friday identified a 23-year-old former Kansas University student, Yelekal Alemu, as the person whose body was found Thursday east of Lawrence.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Alemu’s family who has been notified of his death,” said Sgt. Steve Lewis, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokesman.

Alemu had been missing for nearly three weeks.

Lewis said Friday morning a Lawrence police officer who was conducting a follow-up investigation into Alemu’s disappearance found the body in a wooded area south of the Wakarusa River, near Douglas County Road 1057. Coroner’s investigators used dental records to make the identification.

“The investigation indicates there’s no foul play,” Lewis said.

Ethiopia's Fantu Magiso celebrates the Rome Diamond League (plus Video)

There were two national records by Ethiopian women as Fantu Magiso in the 800m and Abeba Aregawi in the 1500m both secured surprise victories.
Magiso finished in 1min 57.56sec, beating Kenya's Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo, who has run the fastest time over the last 29 years, into second with Russian world champion Mariya Savinova third and former world champion Caster Semenya down in a disappointing eighth.
Aregawi emulated Magiso's feat with the fastest 1500m this year in 3min 56.54sec.

A Journey To The Hottest Place On Earth: Dallol Ethiopia

No one travels alone to the hottest place on earth. You need, for starters, a driver and a Jeep stocked with water bottles and four days of non-perishable food. And because that Jeep is bound to sink in the fine sand of the desert, you need another Jeep (and another driver) to tug it out. There are no places to lodge or dine in this desert, so you'll need space for cots, a cook, plus a few armed guards, because the hottest place on earth is also somewhat lawless. And finally, because an entourage of this size costs many thousands of dollars, you'll need some fellow travelers to split the bill – the sort of people who like to fry themselves on vacation.

My father is the easiest recruit. Dad, who naps best roasting in the afternoon sun, is a lover of extreme heat. He's also an extreme traveler, drawn to the fringes of places, all the countries where no one honeymoons. Alone, he's wandered Rwanda, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan andSierra Leone. From my father, I've inherited both tendencies: I'm known for getting pig-pink sunburns, and also for stalking the edges of maps.
