Africa's Wild Heart -The Great Rift BBC HD Watch the full documentary

Visible from space, Africa's Great Rift Valley runs three thousand miles from the Red Sea to the mouth of the Zambezi. It's a diverse terrain of erupting volcanoes, forest-clad mountains, spectacular valleys, rolling grasslands, huge lakes and mighty rivers, and is home to crocodiles, hippos, lions, elephants, flocks of flamingos and a diversity of indigenous peoples.

Using state-of-the-art high definition filming techniques, this series investigates the geological forces which shaped East Africa's Great Rift and which make it one of the world's most wildlife-rich landscapes.

The Great Rift Valley provides the stage for an epic battle between trees and grass - its course influenced by volcanic eruptions, landscape and rainfall. On its outcome rests the fate of Africa's great game herds. In the Rift's savannas, grazers and their predators struggle to outwit each other, forcing one group of primates to develop a social system that paved the way for the evolution of mankind.

How Ethiopia Lost Control of Its Teff Genetic Resources Read the full report on The Access and Benefit-Sharing Agreement on Teff Genetic Resources

In 2005, Ethiopia concluded an agreement with the Dutch company HPFI, sharing its teff genetic resources in return for a part of the benefits that would be achieved from developing teff products for the European market.

In the end, Ethiopia received practically no benefits.
Instead, due to a broad patent and a questionable bankruptcy, it lost its right to utilize and reap benefits from its own teff genetic resources in the countries where the patent is valid.

Ethiopia get tough draw for 2012 Cecafa Challenge Cup

By Andrew Jackson Oryada
BBC Sport, Kampala
Ethiopia have been handed a tough draw for the upcoming Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup in Uganda.
The Waliya Antelopes - the only East and Central African country to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations - have been pitted against Kenya, newcomers South Sudan and defending champions Uganda in Group A.
The draw for the tournament, which will be held between 24 November and 6 December, was made on Monday at the Serena Hotel in Kampala by Cecafa secretary general Nicholas Musonye.
Ethiopia will play the opening match of the competition against South Sudan.
Uganda coach Bobby Williamson told BBC Sport that playing Ethiopia and Kenya in the same group makes it very difficult but he hopes that his youthful team can stand up to the challenge and retain their title.
Williamson last week omitted from the event some of his senior players, including skipper Andy Mwesigwa, and opted for the younger players who he said need more exposure.
Uganda and South Sudan drew 2-2 in Juba four months ago in a friendly to usher the newcomers into top-flight football.
