56 Ethiopians appear in Zimbabwean court

56 Ethiopian nationals who allegedly entered the country illegally through Nyamapanda Border Post have appeared in court facing charges of contravening the Immigration Act.

Belachaw Abyo aged 28 and 55 others, some of whom are as young as 15, were not asked to plead to contravening section 29 (1) of the Immigration Act chapter 4.2 of unlawful entry and remaining in the country without permits.

The 56 initially appeared before Chitungwiza Magistrate Lazarus Murendo on Wednesday, but due to language barriers they were referred to the Harare Magistrate's Court where they appeared before Mr Milton Serima.

Allegations against the 56 arose on October 21 this year when they illegally sneaked into the country through Nyamapanda Border Post.

It is the state's case that they were transported from Nyamapanda on the same day and were dropped in Kondo village under Chief Seke.

According to the state, on October 22 at around 8.30am, Kondo villagers spotted the group and alerted the police
