A 21-year-old from Ethiopia won the 35th annual Cooper River
Bridge Run Saturday.
Solomon Deksisa crossed the finish line with a time of
29:37.
The women’s winner was 33-year-old Janet Cherobon-Bawcom of
Rome, Ga., with a time of 33:01.
The race started nearly an hour late because of delays
transporting runners from Charleston to Mount Pleasant.
It was one of the more bizarre days in the race’s 35-year
history. The 10K race began in 1978 and is the sixth-largest road race in the
country.
Bridge Run officials capped this year’s race at 43,000
participants, including runners and walkers. That’s up from 40, 0000 last years,
and from 766 finishers in the race’s first year in 1978
