The Somali national football team, nicknamed Ocean Stars, is undergoing intensive training in preparation for the upcoming 2014 Fifa World Cup preliminary qualifier clash against neighbouring Ethiopia.
The team holds morning and afternoon training sessions from Saturday to Wednesday every week, resting on Thursdays and Fridays, according to their coach Abdi Farah Ali.
"We give them technical and physical training sessions. We do our training two and a half hours in the morning and two and a half hours in the afternoon," coach Ali stated.
The team trains at the Somali Political Science University's ill-equipped football field.
"We know you are working in a very volatile country where we have no good facilities but we want you to do your best since you have embraced the name and the flag of Somalia on your back," Somali Football Federation secretary-general Abdi Qani Said Arab told the team members when he paid them a visit on Saturday morning.
"You are going to a Fifa World Cup qualifier match in November, so you have to be fully prepared for the two-leg competition, because the tournament is the most prestigious that a national team can take part in."
Insecurity in the country
Insecurity in the country prevents the SFF from hosting international competitions. As a result, the first leg of the qualifier, on November 11, will take place in either Djibouti or Nairobi, which the federation will use as its homeground. In the second clash, Somalia will be guests of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa on of November 15. After the two legs against Ethiopia, Ocean Stars will head to Qatar where they will take part in the All Arab Games which will kick off in Doha on December 9. According to the SFF, the Somali national team will train in the Qatari capital for 20 days before the start of the games.
