Maputo — Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes dominated the men's and women's half marathons, run on Thursday morning in the national stadium in the Maputo suburb of Zimpeto, during the 10th All-Africa Games.
In the women's event, the Ethiopians Mare Dibaba and Mamitu Daska took the gold and silver medals, running the 21 kilometre distance in times of 1 hour 10 minutes and 47 seconds, and 1.10.52.
Namibian athlete Hilaria Johannes took the bronze in 1.11.12. Mozambican runner Hortencia Domingos came in ninth and last position in 1 hour and 29 minutes. Domingos, who was suffering from a knee injury that affected her performance, told reporters she was pleased that she had been able to represent Mozambique in the race.
In the men's half marathon, Ethiopian athletes Lelisa Benti and Bekana Tolesa took the gold and bronze, in times of 1.04.31 and 1.04.51. The silver medal went to Kenyan Kenneth Kipkemoi in 1.04.44.
Again a Mozambican athlete, Manuel Macossa, came last in this race, with a time of 1.13.51. Macossa said he had suffered from pains in the lower abdomen during the race.www.allafrica.com
