In Recognition of Prof. Taye Mekuria
By: Professor Orvar Johnson
It is a big honor bestowed on me by SSE for giving me the task of the introductory talk on the occasion of the recognition of Prof. Taye Mekuria.
Surgery in its modern sense as a science and art dates back from the late half of the 19th century. The basic requirements for successful surgical management were available. Thanks to a few developments in medical research: Anesthesia, Asepsis and Understanding of Homeostatic Responses in Trauma and Surgery. With that surgery become a mode of management encompassing numerous conditions which up to that time had been the domain of conservative measures. Modern surgery in its original classical form was certainly practiced in Ethiopia from the end of the 19th century mainly by foreigners. The real start of modern surgery took place sometime later in 1964 with the establishment of the medical Faculty and the Department of Surgery at that time, Haile Selassie I University. The first professors of surgery were from UK. However from its inception Ethiopia surgeons were attached to the Department of Surgery in Princess Tsehai Memorial Hospital. And it is there that Prof Taye Mekuria started his career as a surgeon and teacher in surgery. He was appointed Hon. Associate professor 1964 and became an Associate Professor 1968. Looking back in Prof Taye CV we find the following important events of his education and training in medicine and surgery.
BSC University of Brit.Colombia Canada. 1950
BA Med.American University in Beirut. 1952
MD American University in Beirut. 1956
FRCS Glasgow 1961
FRCS Ireland 1962
Prof Taye surgical work and teaching should for considerable time take place in St. Paulos Hospital where he later on becomes the chief surgeon and Director of St. Paulos Hospital.
In this time undergraduate program in surgery included relatively small groups of students. Students from that time remember Prof. Taye with gratitude as an inspiring teacher in surgery at bedside and operating theatres as well from the lecture hall.
Not few of these students are now senior surgeons and some professors at the department of surgery AAU.
From 1974 Ethiopia underwent a deep going social transformation with the Ethiopian revolution. These events should affect the further development of medicine and surgery in different aspects. Progressive measures in order to develop the health services of the country were taken and demanded a high out put of medical doctors and other health personnel. The enrollment to the facility of medicine was raised to more than 100 students yearly and the medical curriculum was revised. In 1980 postgraduate programme in surgery was launched the staff of the department of surgery during that time includes the head of department and three surgeons and Prof. Taye contribution in a heavy burden of surgical work in wards and theatres in teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students become decisive for a successful out come. Prof.Taye was the head of department of surgery AAU from 1986. On the other hand the wars following the revolution demanded the presence of surgeons at the different war fronts. Accordingly, beside his work in department of surgery, Prof. Taye was called on numerous occasions to serve in army. Prof. Taye was called on numerous occasions to serve in army. Prof. Taye was in these years vice president of the Ethiopian Red Cross Association whose task become to lessen the suffering of civilians affected by the war.
Prof. Taye contributions to surgical research in general and to scientific development of surgery in Ethiopia are considerable. He is a fellow or member of a number of international surgical association and colleges, the international college of surgeons and the American college of surgeons to mention a few. It should as well be mentioned at this juncture his contributions the Ethiopia Medical Association where he was the president 1971.He has continuously followed the development of surgery on international meetings and conferences and undertaken research in institutions in UK, USA, France and Germany. Prof Taye scientific production is important and consists of papers of a considerable scientific value in collaboration with surgeons in UK. His papers on important surgical conditions in Ethiopia: Goiter, Hydatid Disease and Pepric ulcer are basic for understanding Ethiopian health problems. And these papers are quite often quoted in later works on the same topics. For his devotion in developing modern surgery in Ethiopia, he was promoted to full rank of professor in 1985.
In conclusion seen in perspective of twenty eight years Prof. Taye should be seen as one of those who introduced modern surgery in practice and teaching in Ethiopia during a time of profound social transformation of the nation.
