SINGAPORE — Former marathon world record holder Haile
Gebrselassie will headline the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore on
Dec 7, although the 41-year-old Ethiopian will be tackling the 10km race
instead of the full marathon.
Gebrselassie won the 10,000m at the
1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics, and won the gold medal for that
distance at four consecutive World Athletic Championships from 1993 to
1999.
He will line up in Singapore alongside close to 13,000 participants for the 10km run
— his first race in South-east Asia
— having once covered the distance in 26min 22.75 secs.
At the 2008 Berlin Marathon, Gebrselassie became the first man to dip below 2hrs 4min for the full marathon
— his record of 2:03:59 stood for three years.
