Ethiopia to host Cecafa

Ethiopia will host the 2014 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup with between November and December while Rwanda will host the Kagame Club Cup in August.

A Cecafa delegation will visit Addis Ababa after the Fifa World Cup [June/July] to finalise the arrangements and sponsorship package, Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye told supersport.com.

The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, has already honoured his pledge of $60,000 [Sh5.2 million] prize money. Cecafa and the Rwanda FA are finalizing a sponsorship package that will cater for all expense for the teams and delegations in the Kagame Club cup.

Meanwhile Cecafa have launched two new regional tournaments that are scheduled for commence in May this was announced in Nairobi on Thursday morning.



The competitions will be for the domestic cup knock-out tournaments and runners-up in the leagues across the Cecafa region.

The new tourney's named Cecafa Nile Basin cup winners cup will be inaugurated in Sudan and expected to commence between May 20th to June 5th.

Cecafa secretary general Nicholas Musonye intimated to supersport.com that the tournament had secured full sponsorship that will cover all air tickets for the teams and delegations, accommodation, local transport and also the prize money.

Musonye also announced the creation of a Cecafa Under-23 Championship which will take part in Sudan in September with the Sudan government providing full sponsorship.

“The Under 23 championship is a perfect tune-up for our teams that will be seeking qualification to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” Musonye said.

The busy Cecafa schedule has partly been possible because a somewhat comfortable financial position after recent signing of a partnership with Africa’s leading sports broadcaster, SuperSport.

SuperSport now have the broadcast rights for the all Cecafa tournaments between 2014 and 2017. “We signed the four-year contract last week,” Musonye said.

Musonye also announced that Fifa will sponsor a seminar for Cecafa Communication Directors in Dar es Salaam between April 30 and May 2.

“All the chairmen of national FAs, general secretaries and communication officers from all member associations will attend. The seminar will be graced by the presence of Fifa secretary general Jerome Valke who arrives in Dar es Salaam on May 30,” Musonye said.
