Abshero joins Gebrselassie and Makau in Bupa Great Manchester Run 2012

Ethiopian Ayele Abshero, already being tipped to become the next world record holder for the marathon, will face compatriot Haile Gebrselassie and Kenyan Patrick Makau, the past and present incumbents of the title, at the Bupa Great Manchester Run next weekend.

Abshero first showed his vast potential for the future with his 2009 IAAF World Cross Country junior title, before steering a different career pathway from that normally adopted by Ethiopian athletes, including Gebrselassie, the world's greatest ever distance athlete.

Instead of chasing global titles on the track which Gebrselassie, a two-time Olympic 10,000m gold medallist did so successfully before stepping up to the marathon, the 21-year-old Abshero has already committed himself to a road running career.

Ethiopian distance great Kenenisa Bekele has sent out a warning shot to potential Olympic rivals, including Team GB's Mo Farah, by saying that he is aiming to do the 5,000-10,000 metre double at the London Games.

Bekele, the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder over both distances, has been hampered by injury over the past two years, but proclaimed himself here to be "free of injury" although not training at 100 per cent.

The 29 year-old, who has 16 world titles to his name, raced just once in 2010 and twice in 2011 as he attempted to shrug off calf and knee injuries.

He suffered a disastrous world championships in Daegu, South Korea, last year, limping out of the 10,000m and withdrawing from the 5,000m.

But he rebounded to set the fastest 10,000m of the 2011 season at the final Diamond League meeting in Brussels in September, a race he said had been a huge boost ahead of winter training.

"That Brussels race was very important for me, it helped build up my confidence," Bekele said ahead of the season-opening Diamond League meeting here on Friday, where he will race the 3000m, a non-Olympic event.

           

Ethiopian Orthodox Church in London want to convert the cinema from a nightclub into a place of worship

Plans by an Ethiopian Orthodox Church to turn a rare example of an Edwardian cinema into a 1960s pastiche replica of the Ethiopian church which claims to house the Ark of the Covenant are being fought by a conservation group.

The Friends of Clapton Cinematograph Theatre (FCCT) have been campaigning for five years to restore one of Britain’s oldest purpose built cinemas in Lower Clapton Road to its former glory as a cultural centre for the whole community.

But now the cinema’s owners St Mary of Zion have submitted a planning application to the Council to alter the heritage building which lies in the Clapton Pond conservation area.

Nearly 800 people have signed a petition calling for the building to be preserved, and eminent cinema historian Dr Nicholas H
iley remarked on the petition site: “Such survivals from the earliest days of cinema are rare and should be preserved as an important part of British social history.”

Ethiopia to use Dutch athletics meet as Olympic trials for men’s 10,000 meters

BRUSSELS — Ethiopia will have its Olympic trials for the men’s 10,000 meters at the FBK Games in the Netherlands on May 27.

Agent Jos Hermens said Wednesday that the top two Ethiopian runners in that race will automatically qualify for the London Games, while the federation will keep its options of filling the third spot for the long-distance race.

Haile Gebrselassie was already slated to run that race and even though the 1996 and 2000 Olympic champion stands little choice to make the top two, his agent Hermens said “he will not say no if he gets through.”

Kenenisa Bekele, who won the last two Olympic races, will not compete in the FBK Games and will likely fill the third slot.

SouthWest Energy of Ethiopia Optimistic on Oil Search in Ogaden

SouthWest Energy, an Ethiopian oil- exploration company, said it’s optimistic about the results of a seismic survey in the Ogaden basin and has met oil majors to discuss a possible partnership in the Horn of Africa country.

The initial findings from the survey completed in February are “very encouraging,” Chairman Tewodros Ashenafi said in an interview on May 7 in the capital, Addis Ababa. “Discovery could very well possibly happen next year.”

Infrastructure needed for production, which would start at least four years after any discovery, may cost as much as $3 billion, according to Tewodros. “That can only be done by the big boys,” he said, without providing further details.

Pakistani, Bangladeshi & Ethiopian Stealing And Selling Diesel

KUWAIT CITY, May 8: The Jahra Traffic Police have arrested a three-man gang — a Pakistani, a Bangladeshi and an Ethiopian - for stealing and selling diesel from Umm Al-Aish, reports Al-Rai daily.

The men were arrested while driving along a road in Abdali. The Pakistani and the Bangladeshi had hired the vehicle of the Ethiopian to transport the stolen diesel.

They have been referred to the concerned authorities for legal action.

በአማራ ክልል በደቡብ ወሎ ዞን አማራ ሳይንት ወረዳ በምትገኘውና ዛሬ በምትነግሠው ርእሰ አድባራት ተድባበ ማርያም ገዳም ለንግሥ በመጓዝ ላይ የነበሩ 17 ሰዎች፣ በደረሰባቸው የመኪና መገልበጥ አደጋ ከትናንትና በስቲያ ሕይወታቸው ማለፉን በስፍራው የነበሩ የዓይን እማኞች ለሪፖርተር ገለጹ፡፡ ከትናንት በስቲያ ከቀኑ ዘጠኝ ሰዓት ሲሆን በደረሰው የመኪና መገልበጥ አደጋ 17 ሰዎች ወዲያውኑ ሕይወታቸው ማለፉን፣ ሁለት ሰዎች ወደ ደሴ ሆስፒታል መላካቸውን፣ ሁለት ደግሞ ሳይንት አጅባር ህዳር 11 ሆስፒታል መግባታቸውንና አንድ ተጐጂ ደግሞ ሳይንት አጅባር ጤና ጣቢያ ዕርዳታ እየተደረገላቸው እንደሚገኙ እማኞቹ ተናግረዋል፡፡

ሕይወታቸው ካለፉት 17 ሰዎች መካከል አሥሩ እዚያው ተድባበ ማርያም ገዳም የቀብር ሥርዓታቸው በትናንትናው ዕለት ከምሽቱ 11 ሰዓት መፈጸሙን፣ የቀሪዎቹ አስከሬን ወደ አዲስ አበባና ወደየመጡበት አካባቢ እየተሸኘ መሆኑንም አስታውቀዋል፡፡

ከአዲስ አበባ በ600 ኪሎ ሜትርና ከሳይንት አጅባር በ40 ኪሎ ሜትር ርቀት ላይ የምትገኘው የተድባበ ማርያም ገዳም ለመድረስ ጥቂት ርቀት ሲቀር ባለው ገደላማ ቦታ ላይ ሲደርስ፣ አንድ መነኩሴና ሁለት ወጣቶች ወርደው በእግራቸው መጓዝ በመጀመራቸው ከአደጋው መትረፋቸውን እማኞቹ ገልጸዋል፡፡ በመኪና አደጋው ሕይወታቸው ላለፈውና የቀብር ሥርዓታቸው በዚያው በገዳሙ ለተፈጸመው ምዕመናን ብፁዕ አቡነ ገብርኤል በተገኙበት በፈረንሳይ አቦ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ትናንት ምሽት ላይ ፀሎተ ፍትሐት መደረጉን ምንጮች ገልጸዋል፡፡
