Ethiopia airline hub in DRC to exploit China links

LONDON — Ethiopia Airlines Enterprise said it would locate its fourth hub in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as Africa’s second-biggest carrier seeks to tap Chinese economic links and fill long-haul flights to destinations such as Brazil.

Ethiopian Airlines is negotiating with the Congolese government and could agree terms for a start-up carrier based in Kinshasa this year, CEO Tewolde GebreMariam said at the weekend in London.

Congo’s population of more than 65-million people, and its natural resources estimated at $17-trillion make it ideal for a central African base, he said. In addition to Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Airlines also has bases in Togo in the west and Malawi in the south as it vies with South African Airways and Kenya Airways to build a pan-African network.

Ethiopian irrigation minister invites Egypt for more 'Renaissance Dam' talks

Egypt's irrigation minister Mohamed Abdel-Motteleb will go to Addis Ababa on Monday, but has already said that Egypt is not ready to compromise on its previous stance to the Ethiopian dam project
Ethiopia's irrigation minister has invited his Egyptian counterpart to the capital of Addis Ababa for further talks on Monday, in hopes of ending a political impasse between the two Nile countries over a proposed hydroelectric dam.

Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported on Sunday that Egyptian irrigation minister Mohamed Abdel-Motteleb had accepted the invitation from Ethiopia's Alemayehu Tegenu and will travel with members from his ministry's Nile water sector as well as the country's foreign ministry.

Ahead of the talks, however, Abdel-Motteleb announced that Egypt's position on Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam "is fixed," a harbinger that Monday's negotiations may not offer the kind of compromise that Ethiopia may be hoping for.

According to Al-Ahram, Motteleb said that Ethiopia could still achieve economic prosperity without impeding upon Egypt's access to the Nile.

Woman in "fake" Saudi princess case worked as prostitute in Dubai, witness says

The woman at the centre of a $20m London property fraud case allegedly worked in Dubai as a prostitute 20 years ago, a former friend has claimed.

Negat Ali, an Ethiopia-born south London furniture dealer, has previously told a London court that Sara Al Amoudi was not a Saudi princess as she has claimed but a former prostitute originally from Ethiopia and they had previously worked together in a restaurant in Yemen.

In her witness statement, obtained by Arabian Business, Ethiopian-born Ali said she became friends with Al Amoudi in Yemen between 1985 and 1989, saying her mother, a woman named Hassina, owned a restaurant in Sanaa and the family had a bad reputation.

How An Israeli Stranger Helped An Ethiopian Girl Escape Prostitution

Sofiya Nigatu was working in a remote Ethiopian brothel when a traveler’s act of kindness helped transform her future.

If kindness were a religion, Ishay Hadas would be its pope.

Back in 2004, Hadas, a 58 year-old advertising producer from Israel, was traveling through Ethiopia when he stumbled upon a young girl by the name of Sofiya Nigatu. She was 19 at the time, working as a waitress at a sketchy makeshift bar in a small mining town 460 miles north of Addis Ababa.
An orphan, Sofiya had dropped out of high school to support herself. She had only been at the bar for two weeks when Hadas walked in. The place was no more than a tent with a few chairs and tables. It also doubled as the local brothel.

Hadas, whose archeological expedition camped at that small tiny town for the night, decided to check out the only bar in the area. That’s when he noticed Sofiya. There was something about the young girl that touched his heart.

At 90, This Doctor Is Still Calling

We in journalism tend to cover airplane crashes, corrupt officials and loathsome criminals with gusto, but let’s take a break and applaud a hero.

Catherine Hamlin, an Australian gynecologist who has spent most of her life in Ethiopia, is a 21st-century Mother Teresa. She has revolutionized care of a childbirth injury called obstetric fistula, which occurs when the baby gets stuck in the birth canal and there is no doctor to perform a cesarean section. As many as two million women (and often young teenage girls) worldwide suffer from fistulas. The babies die, and the woman is left incontinent with urine and sometimes feces trickling through her vagina.

She is stigmatized. She smells. She is ashamed.

Dr. Hamlin and her late husband, Reg, set up a fistula hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and their work proves that it is possible to repair the injuries cheaply. This hospital trained generations of doctors to repair fistulas and provided a model that has been replicated in other countries.

Saintfiet interested in Walia job

Belgian Tom Saintfiet has declared his interest in the Ethiopian head coach position left vacant after coach Sewnet Bishaw was sacked on Wednesday.

Saintfiet who was incharge of the Walia Ibex in 2011, caused a stir within ten days of being appointed when he guided Ethiopia local players to a 2-2 draw against African champions Nigeria in Addis Ababa before resigning his position in a huff later.

"Sewnet Bishaw has done a good job with Walia and as a fellow coach I have to give him the credit he deserves. In my tenure as Ethiopia coach I can be credited for selecting and giving a chance to players like Asrat Megersa and Getaneh Kebede who have since made a mark. I left the county because of some disagreement but I believe I have alot to offer Walia especially seeing that the big matches have been a big mountain to climb for them.”
