82 Ethiopian nationals detained

Dodoma. The police here have detained 82 people believed to be Ethiopian nationals over illegal entry into the country. Regional Police Commander (RPC) Mr Zelothe Stephen said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday at Chitego Village in Kongwa District.

A statement issued by the regional police boss said the suspected illegal migrants come from Kambata, Hadia and Sirite villages in Ethiopia and  entered the country via Kenya.

The RPC issued the statement a day after it was established that 43 suspected illegal immigrants from Ethiopia had died due to lack of air and food in a lorry’s container. They were travelling to southern countries.

The driver, who is still at large, abandoned the lorry, the dead bodies and survivors, who were in a bad condition after establishing that some of them had died.

The lorry, the bodies and survivors were abandoned at a roadside and were found on Tuesday morning by villagers who, informed the police.

“After we were notified we sent our team to the village some 114 kilometres from Dodoma town and managed to arrest 82 people over illegal entry.

“In addition to the survivors, most of who were in a bad condition, we also found 43 bodies of people, who had apparently died due to lack of air and food,” said Mr Stephen.

He said after abandoning them, the survivors started walking from the area and were arrested near Izava Village in Chamwino District.

The RPC said in collaboration with the villagers, they managed to nab 82 people and there was no report if there were some people, who managed to escape the police net.

He said during interrogation, the suspects, who speak bad English, said they were from Ethiopia and entered the country via Kenya.

“They told us that they boarded two lorries to Arusha and continued with their journey to Dodoma and wanted to go to Malawi. They said they started their journey about five months ago,” he said in the statement.

He noted that they told the police that there was a group of people in Nairobi, Kenya, who had arranged transport for them to Malawi.

According to Mr Stephen, the suspected illegal immigrants are collected by agents and placed in special houses where they are fed. After they reach a certain number they are placed in lorries and ferried to Malawi through Tanzania.

Tanzania:Ethiopian Migrants die in truck

The survivors were helped by villagers

Some 42 migrants have been found dead in the back of a truck in Tanzania.
Tanzania's Deputy Interior Minister Pereira Silima said they had come from Ethiopia and died from asphyxiation.
Local officials said more than 120 people had been packed into the truck, which was headed for Malawi.
Tanzania and Malawi have become key staging posts for people fleeing drought and conflict in Somalia and Ethiopia, and trying to reach South Africa.
'Dumped the dead'


Mr Silima said that according to survivor accounts, the 127 migrants had started off from Ethiopia in two trucks.
They passed through Kenya's capital, Nairobi, and onto the Tanzania town of Arusha where they were transferred into one lorry, he told the BBC's Network Africa programme.
The driver noticed there were problems in the central Dodoma region and stopped the vehicle.
"When he found out that at least 41 were dead, he released the survivors and dumped the dead in the bush," the minister said.
The container truck then drove off and the authorities are trying to trace it and the driver, he said.
Nearby villagers helped the survivors, one of whom later died.
Mr Silima said when the migrants were well enough, they would be taken to court and their embassy would be contacted.
Last week, at least 47 East African migrants drowned when their boat capsized on Lake Malawi after sailing from Tanzania.

ክሱን ሲመረምር የቆየው የፌደራል ከፍተኛ ፍርድ ቤት ሦስተኛ ወንጀል ችሎት ጥፋተኛ ያላቸው አንዷለም አራጌ፣ ናትናኤል መኮንን፣ ዮሐንስ ተረፈ፣ የሽዋስ ይሁንዓለም፣ ክንፈሚካኤል ደበበ፣ ምትኩ ዳምጤ፣ እስክንድር ነጋና አንዱዓለም  አያሌው በማረሚያ ቤቱ ሲገኙ፣ የተቀሩት በሌሉበት ጥፋተኛ ተብለዋል፡፡

ተከሳሾቹ የተመሠረቱባቸውን ስድስት ክሶች ባለመከላከላቸው የጥፋተኝነት ውሳኔ ማስተላለፉን ፍርድ ቤቱ አስታውቋል፡፡

ዓቃቤ ሕግና ተከሳሾች የቅጣት ማክበጃና ማቅለያ ሐሳብ እንዲያቀርቡ ተጠይቀው፣ ዓቃቤ ሕግ በሰጠው የቅጣት ማክበጃ አስተያየት ተከሳሾች እንደተመሠረተባቸው የክስ ዓይነት ከአምስት ዓመት እስከ ዕድሜ ልክ ጽኑ እስራት እንዲቀጡለት ፍርድ ቤቱን ጠይቋል፡፡

'Hopes of Ethiopia' Watch the full Documentary

As part of the celebration of the London Olympics and Paralympic Games, The British Embassy has commissioned an Olympic-themed short film, titled 'Hopes of Ethiopia'.
The film focuses on the activities and aspirations of three Ethiopian athletes as they prepare for London 2012. Featured in the film: Yanet Seyoum, Ethiopia’s first female Olympic swimmer; Mohamed Aman, an-800 meters runner with a real shot at winning gold and Tesfalem Gebru, paralympian who lost his hand when his house was bombed during the Ethio-Eritrea war.


The film premiere will be on June 28 in Addis Ababa.


The main objective of this short documentary is to celebrate the hope, talent and confidence of Ethiopia’s athletes and to showcase them to the next generation that will seek to emulate them.


In addition to featuring inspiring performances from some of the world’s greatest athletes, the London 2012 Paralympic Games is an opportunity to change attitudes towards people with disabilities by driving home the fact that “disability is not inability” - this helps the wider goal of building a more inclusive society. This film hopes to challenge negative attitudes towards disability in Ethiopia by featuring Tesfalem.


Supporting the development of a new generation of open, inspiring, and talented leaders in Ethiopia is a key objective of the British government. We believe that the three athletes can help inspire Ethiopia’s youth and help promote the talent and boost the morale of Ethiopia’s emerging generation.


The film also promotes Ethiopian film talent, as the production company, EPIC Media, is Ethiopian. The documentary was shot in full HD and showcases strong and colorful visual images, innovative camerawork and fast moving editing techniques to appeal to Ethiopia’s young generation – the target audience. This will help promote a positive image of the non-sporting talent that exists in Ethiopia to local and international viewers.

Wholesale Turn - The unexpected replacement of ECX chief Elleni Gabre-Madhin

At the beginning of last week, there were only a few officials from government institutions who had been informed of the news that Eleni Z. Gabre-Madhin (PhD), founding CEO of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX), would be replaced by Anteneh Assefa, vice president of the Bank of Abyssinia (BoA), through a letter signed by Addisu Legesse, board chairman.

Three days later, Eleni and the other expatriate management team members held a press conference on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

It is all part of a succession plan set in motion about two years ago, where finding a successful and promising successor took almost eight months, according to her.

“Many keep asking me ‘Why now?’ and think that something must have happened to make me to leave the ECX,” Eleni told Fortune. “I keep trying to explain that the management’s exit has been part of a plan set down at the very beginning.”

Indeed, the government had created a headhunting team chaired by Debretsion G. Mikael, minister of Science & Technology, comprising of members such as Beyene G. Meskel, director general of the Ethiopian Privatisation & Public Enterprises Supervising Agency; Abdella Bagerish, a private coffee exporter; and Eleni. It was a committee aided by a local employment company, Talent Search, which shortlisted nine applicants.

Four were finally selected to take five sets of screening instruments, including making an unusual presentation to the management of the ECX, which they were supposed to command when appointed, sources disclosed. At the end, the board of directors reached a “unanimous decision” to pick Anteneh, a banker whose operational skills are well recognised within the banking industry.

“I have known him for years,” said a businessman in the coffee export business. “I do not know much about his place in exchange of commodities, but he is a very talented young, up-and-coming operational person.”

Anteneh, father of two daughters, began his career as a graduate trainee with the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), after he graduated in management from Addis Abeba University (AAU). He later on pursued his postgraduate studies in corporate management and finance at the University of Paris (Sorbonne).

Almost 10 years younger than his predecessor, Anteneh has 12 years of experience in the banking industry, eight of these with the CBE. A little over four years ago, he joined Bank of Abyssinia as secretary of the board, where he was promptly promoted to vice president. Nonetheless, his bid to claim the topmost position at Zemen Bank, a year ago, had been rejected by the central bank, for lack of experience in credit management.
